Sonic the Hedgehog (2020) Movie Review (WARNING: SPOILERS!)
At the beginning of the movie, we meet baby Sonic (looks kike Baby Yoda has some competition!). I think if I remembered correctly, that this owl was Sonic's teacher or mother??? But anyways, they get attacked by what looks like some echidnas (could Knuckles be the leader?). The owl then gives Sonic these rings that will take him places and he runs off, with the owl gone. RIP.
The movie now focuses to Tom, the sheriff (as Sonic calls him, the Donut Lord) on a highway. Sonic speeds pasts him twice. He then gets out the car and finds one of Sonic's quills or hair or whatever. We then see Sonic again, saving a turtle from a near death experience (looks like the turtle didn't like it!). I believe after that, the whole town is talking about a blue demon (a sketch in the film shows the Sanic meme). He then says in case he gets spotted, go to the land of the mushrooms. He also says "I hate mushrooms..." (I smell Mario vs. Sonic reference here?)
Skipping ahead, Sonic decides to play baseball... by himself. He then gets mad because no one watched him and he speeds so fast that a power outage happens across the world!
So... in the first trailer with the poor Sonic, he speeds down a road and it causes the outage. Well, after the redesign, changing it to him playing baseball makes sense.
We later meet Jim Carey as Robotnik using his advanced technology to track down Sonic. Sonic then panics and goes to Tom's house. And yes, the uh... meow scene is there, although the voice is different from the trailers. After being hit with the tranquillizer dart, he sees Tom's shirt and drops the portal ring and loses the bag on top of a building in San Francisco. Tom then puts Sonic in a cage and hides him because Robotnik is now at Tom's house. Sonic freaks out from the red lasers or scanners and hides. But, he shows himself and Robotnik freaks out (my favorite in this scene).
Skipping ahead again. Sonic decides to go in a bar or something and a fight breaks out. This is one of my favorite parts in the movie with the slo-mo and all of it. They drive away (forgetting that the food Tom brought is in the front of the truck). They then get chased by Robotnik and after that, a bomb latches onto Sonic. He gets it out but the explosion causes him to pass out. After him being revived, the little girl (forgot her name) gives Sonic his iconic red and white shoes.
Skipping ahead to the near end, we come to an epic fight as Sonic is weak to fight. But then, Tom using one of the rings (this part reminds me of Doctor Strange lol) fights Robotnik. Then, after the whole town feels down for Sonic, Sonic gets his power back (is this seriously replacing Super Sonic in the games?) and sends Robotnik back to the world of the mushrooms. I love this movie already.
In 2 post credits scenes (wasn't expecting that), we see crazy Robotnik at the land of the mushrooms, shaving his hair to look like the iconic Eggman. But the second one is a surprise!!!!! It's Tails!!!!!! Oh my god!!!!!! His design looks so close to his official appearance. He says that his buddy (Sonic) could be anywhere. Could we be seeing a sequel next year??????????
So, that's the Sonic movie! I would be seeing a sequel. Maybe Robotnik could come back to Earth by the power of the Chaos Emeralds. Tails could have an orgin like Sonic. Maybe how they met???? Knuckles could appear for a possible third movie. I don't know, but the possibilities are endless.
If they stuck with that ugly design. I would be having nightmares, but Paramount did the right thing by changing the design to match the Sonic we know and love. Sadly, the company who did Sonic's redesign shut down. It seems that video game movies are doing good, just like Detective Pikachu did last year, which I'm looking forward to in Illumination's Super Mario Movie. In conclusion, when the Sonic DVD/Blu-ray comes out, I would love to see that ugly Sonic make it as a deleted scene or cut. Maybe they could showed what Tails looked liked before his redesign in the movie or maybe they put him in the movie because of the Sonic redesign.
